Vernonia hirsuta is a vibrant grassland plant that attracts a wide range of pollinators. Its bright purple flowers stand out clearly and are often busy with insect activity.

Vernonia hirsuta is a tall indigenous grassland perennial recognised for its vivid purple flower heads and distinctive quilted silver-grey leaves. Emerging from underground rootstocks after winter, the flower buds first appear as silvery balls before opening into dense clusters that attract bees, butterflies and beetles. After flowering, the wind-dispersed seeds form soft silver seed heads that remain decorative in the grassland landscape long after the blooms have faded.

Look for clusters of purple, fluffy flower heads on upright stems.

Found in grasslands and along forest margins.

Flowers in summer.

No major safety concerns.

Listed as Least Concern.

Highly attractive to bees and butterflies — a strong pollinator species.
