Scadoxus puniceus is a highly distinctive forest plant, known for its bold red flower head. It is often found in shaded environments where it adds a burst of colour to the forest floor.
Scadoxus puniceus is one of the most dramatic indigenous lilies found in eastern South Africa, producing dense crimson flower heads that emerge explosively from the ground in early spring. The spotted stems, glossy leaves and bright red berries make the plant visually remarkable throughout its entire growth cycle. Birds, monkeys, bees and sunbirds are all attracted to the flowers and fruit, while the underground bulb stores moisture during the dry winter months. Despite its beauty, the bulb is poisonous and should not be disturbed in the wild.
