Rivers & Wetlands
Rivers and wetlands are central to the Dargle’s ecological health, supporting both biodiversity and water systems. These environments sustain a wide range of plant and animal life while regulating water flow across the landscape.
Wetlands and rivers naturally filter and store water while protecting ecosystems downstream.
Quick Facts
- The uMngeni River supplies water to 5 million people.
- Wetlands naturally clean and store water.
- The Dargle River begins in mistbelt grasslands.
- Midlands wetlands support endangered Wattled Cranes.
- Healthy rivers can restore water quality naturally.
- Invasive plants threaten river ecosystems.

From Source to Sea
The Dargle forms part of the upper catchment of the uMngeni River system, which supplies water to millions of people downstream — including cities like Pietermaritzburg and Durban.
Wetlands in this area are often called “water factories” because they store rainfall and release it slowly into rivers over time. Without them, water systems become unstable, leading to flooding in wet periods and shortages in dry ones. Healthy riverbanks also support species like frogs, otters, and waterbirds — all indicators of a functioning ecosystem.
