Graderia scabra is a striking perennial grassland species with deep pink tubular flowers and softly hairy leaves. Beyond its visual appeal, the plant has a rich cultural history across southern Africa, where it has traditionally been used in herbal remedies and ceremonial practices. In parts of Pondoland, the roots were historically chewed and used as a natural perfume by young men. Its widespread distribution across grasslands makes it an important and recognisable species in the Midlands landscape.
How to identify it
Look for upright stems with clusters of tubular pink flowers. The leaves are slightly hairy and toothed.
Habitat & where to look
Occurs in grasslands across KwaZulu-Natal and is also found in the Eastern Cape, Gauteng, Mpumalanga and Western Cape.

Flowers during summer.
