Dais cotinifolia is one of the most recognisable spring trees in the Midlands. Its pink blossoms signal the change of season and create a striking display across the landscape.

Dais cotinifolia is one of the signature spring flowering trees of the Midlands, transforming mistbelt forests with masses of soft pink pompon-like blossoms. Fast growing, frost hardy and drought tolerant once established, it is widely planted in gardens, streets and forest margins throughout the region. Traditionally, the bark was stripped for rope-making and is considered one of the strongest natural fibres among KwaZulu-Natal trees. Even after flowering, the decorative seed capsules remain attractive well into autumn.

Look for clusters of rounded pink flowers and fresh green leaves with plum-coloured veins.

Occurs naturally along forest margins but is commonly planted in gardens and along streets.

Flowers in spring.

No major safety concerns.

Listed as Least Concern on South Africa’s Red List.

Historically valued for its strong fibre, used for rope.
